The former cannot be experimentally validated and therefore remains assumed, and recent findings have called into question the latter: non-human primates become increasingly urgent as the time spent making a decision increases, but humans do not; from a normative perspective, monkeys are making closer-to-optimal decisions than humans. Rather than presuming species differences, here we test an alternative hypothesis: previously overlooked differences in methodological procedures from the two research traditions implicitly reinforced fundamentally different decision strategies across the two species. We show that when humans experience decision contexts matched to those experienced by non-human primates - extensive task practice, or time-based penalties - they display increasing levels of urgency as decision time grows longer, in precisely the same manner as non-human primates. Our findings indicate that previously observed differences in decision strategy between humans and non-human primates are eliminated when the decision environment is more closely matched across species, placing a constraint on the interpretation and mapping of neurophysiological results in non-human primates to humans when there are fundamental differences in the task design.]]> Wed 25 Jan 2023 10:41:33 AEDT ]]> The computations that support simple decision-making: a comparison between the diffusion and urgency-gating models https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:30938 Wed 11 Apr 2018 10:38:07 AEST ]]> How is multi-tasking different from increased difficulty? https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:39862 Tue 28 Jun 2022 13:58:00 AEST ]]> The Quality of Response Time Data Inference: A Blinded, Collaborative Assessment of the Validity of Cognitive Models https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:44967 Tue 25 Oct 2022 14:41:46 AEDT ]]> Optimal or not; depends on the task https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:43805 Tue 04 Oct 2022 09:12:32 AEDT ]]> A Broader Application of the Detection Response Task to Cognitive Tasks and Online Environments https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:49483 Thu 18 May 2023 15:43:55 AEST ]]> Modeling the Covariance Structure of Complex Datasets Using Cognitive Models: An Application to Individual Differences and the Heritability of Cognitive Ability https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:43285 Thu 15 Sep 2022 12:30:25 AEST ]]> The role of passing time in decision-making https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:37356 Thu 15 Oct 2020 14:19:21 AEDT ]]> A theoretical analysis of the reward rate optimality of collapsing decision criteria https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:44448 Thu 13 Oct 2022 14:24:30 AEDT ]]> Model flexibility analysis does not measure the persuasiveness of a fit https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:33238 Thu 03 Feb 2022 12:19:04 AEDT ]]> Need for closure is associated with urgency in perceptual decision-making https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:31344 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:44:37 AEDT ]]> Refining the law of practice https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:33236 Fri 14 Sep 2018 16:33:16 AEST ]]> People adopt optimal policies in simple decision-making, after practice and guidance https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:33239 Fri 14 Sep 2018 16:33:15 AEST ]]> Bayes factors for the linear ballistic accumulator model of decision-making https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:33237 Fri 14 Sep 2018 16:33:09 AEST ]]>
